iPhone / iPod touch
tested with Firmware 2.0.2 - 3.1.3
(likely works with higher versions, too, as soon a jailbreak becomes available)
Everything on this page applies also to the first & second generation iPod touch.
The iPhone does not work out of the box since it doesn’t provide the so called “Disk mode” common iPods provide and which iPod.iTunes uses to access an iPod. To get disk mode on the iPhone, follow these steps:
1.If your iPhone is automatically syncing with iTunes, or if you’re not sure, open the iTunes Preferences, click the “Syncing” tab (in iTunes 8 it is “Devices”) and turn on “Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods”.
5.Connect your iPhone via USB, it will appear in iTunes.
6.iPod touch ONLY: In iTunes, select the iPhone and enable “Manually manage music and videos”. Click “Apply”.
7.Connect from your Mac to your iPhone:
Under “Network/Shared” your iPhone appears (if it doesn’t you may need to reboot your iPhone):
8.Connect to the iPhone (“Connect As...”) with the username “mobile” and the password “alpine”:
9.Click connect and the following will appear (in recent releases you will see a folder “home” instead):
11.Launch iPod.iTunes and synchronize from iPhone to iTunes.
12.When you are done click the “Eject iPod” button in iPod.iTunes.
Please note:
•Make sure the iPhone's Wifi connection is strong and stable. It should show 3 bars for the connection strength all the time. Otherwise the sync may be very slow or even fail.
•Synchronization from iPhone to iTunes works, but not from iTunes to the iPhone.
2.Click “OK” and quit iTunes.
3.If you haven’t already, you need to jailbreak your iPhone first. For jailbreak instructions click here. Note: If you get any messages from iTunes during the jailbreak, do not answer them, just ignore it until the jailbreak is done.
4.On the iPhone, open Cydia, go to “Sections” -> “Network” and install “Netatalk”.
Netatalk provides File Sharing (Disk Mode) on the iPhone via Wifi.
(screenshots may appear a bit different, depending on your firmware version)
10.Double-click onto the “mobile” (or “home”) folder to actually mount it:
