iPhone / iPod touch / iPad

Everything on this page applies also to the iPod touch and the iPad.

The iPhone does not work out of the box since it doesn’t provide the so called “Disk mode” common iPods provide and which iPod.iTunes uses to access an iPod. To get disk mode on the iPhone, follow these steps:

1. 1.If your iPhone is automatically syncing with iTunes, or if you’re not sure, open the iTunes Preferences, click the “Devices” tab (in iTunes 9 it is “Syncing”) and turn on “Prevent iPod, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically” (in iTunes 9 the wording is a bit different).

5. 5.Connect your iPhone via USB, it will appear in iTunes.
   

6. 6.iPod touch ONLY: In iTunes, select the iPod touch and enable “Manually manage music and videos”. Click “Apply”.
   

7. 7.Connect from your Mac to your iPhone:
   Under “Network/Shared” your iPhone appears (if it doesn’t you may need to reboot your iPhone):

8. 8.Connect to the iPhone (“Connect As...”) with the username “mobile” and the password “alpine”:

9. 9.Click connect and the following will appear (in recent releases you will see a folder “home” instead):

11. 11.Launch iPod.iTunes and synchronize from iPhone to iTunes.
    

12. 12.When you are done click the “Eject iPod” button in iPod.iTunes.
    
    

Please note:

1. •Make sure the iPhone's Wifi connection is strong and stable. It should show 3 bars for the connection strength all the time. Otherwise the sync may be very slow or even fail.
   

2. •Synchronization from iPhone to iTunes works, but not from iTunes to the iPhone.
   

3. •These instructions have been tested with iPhone Firmware 2.0.2 - 4.0.2. It will very likely work with higher firmware versions too, as soon a jailbreak is available for those versions.

2. 2.Click “OK” and quit iTunes.
   

3. 3.If you haven’t already, you need to jailbreak your iPhone first.

4. 4.On the iPhone, open Cydia, go to “Sections” -> “Network” and install “Netatalk”.
   Netatalk provides File Sharing (Disk Mode) on the iPhone via Wifi.
